PM Modi Attends Maldives’ 60th Independence Day as Chief Guest, Announces $565 Million Credit Line

PM Modi Maldives visit 2025

July 26,2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday attended the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Chief Guest, marking a significant moment in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. This is Modi’s first visit to the island nation during President Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure and comes amid a renewed push to strengthen regional ties under India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.

The two-day state visit began on July 25, with PM Modi receiving a red-carpet welcome upon arrival in Male. The Indian diaspora in the Maldives greeted him with enthusiastic chants of “Vande Mataram,” reflecting the strong cultural and people-to-people ties between the nations.

During his visit, PM Modi held high-level discussions with President Muizzu and other senior officials. In a joint statement, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including maritime security, climate change, digital infrastructure, and economic development.

One of the key highlights of the visit was Modi’s announcement of a $565 million line of credit to the Maldives for development projects in climate resilience, infrastructure, and economic recovery. The credit line is seen as a vital support mechanism as the Maldives continues to navigate a challenging debt environment. India had previously stepped in with financial assistance when the Maldives was facing the threat of a sovereign debt default.

The leaders also launched discussions on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and investment. Talks will focus on sectors such as fisheries, tourism, and healthcare.

In addition to the diplomatic talks, PM Modi inaugurated the Dhoshimeyna Building, the new Ministry of Defence headquarters in Male, constructed with Indian assistance. He also met with ITEC alumni and members of the Indian community, emphasizing the importance of people-to-people engagement.

This visit marks a significant shift in India-Maldives relations, especially after a period of strain during the early phase of President Muizzu’s term, which was marked by an “India Out” campaign. The current leadership has since signalled a desire to reset ties, and Modi’s presence at the national celebrations underscores India’s continued strategic interest in the Indian Ocean region.

Speaking at the Independence Day ceremony, PM Modi highlighted the historical and cultural bonds shared between the two nations and reiterated India’s unwavering support for the Maldives’ sovereignty, security, and prosperity.

The visit is seen as a major diplomatic win for both sides and a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to regional cooperation and stability through its “Neighbourhood First” and “MAHASAGAR” (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) policies.

With trade talks initiated and strategic cooperation reaffirmed, PM Modi’s visit is likely to open a new chapter in India-Maldives relations, positioning both countries for greater economic and regional collaboration.
