July 26,2025:
Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Friday referred to India as the country’s “closest and most dependable partner” during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Malé. The statement marks a significant development in bilateral ties, coming after months of diplomatic tension between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi, in his first official bilateral trip during his third term, was received with full state honours. The visit aimed to reinforce India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and strengthen regional cooperation, particularly with strategic partners in the Indian Ocean region.
In a joint address following delegation-level talks, President Muizzu expressed appreciation for India’s consistent support in the Maldives’ developmental journey. “India has remained a steadfast friend of the Maldives through every challenge. We consider India our closest and most reliable partner,” he stated.
The two countries signed several agreements across key areas, including infrastructure, health services, renewable energy, and human resource development. The MoUs also included initiatives to enhance maritime cooperation and technical assistance in the security domain.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s readiness to collaborate closely with the Maldives on shared priorities. “The Maldives continues to be a vital part of India’s regional vision. We are committed to advancing our partnership through inclusive growth, connectivity, and people-to-people ties,” he said during his remarks.
The visit also focused on expanding cooperation in environmental sustainability and climate resilience—issues of critical concern to the Maldives, which faces significant threats due to rising sea levels. Both leaders emphasized the importance of collective efforts in tackling global environmental challenges.
Observers view President Muizzu’s remarks as a noteworthy shift in tone. His earlier statements during the 2023 election campaign had indicated a preference for recalibrating foreign relations, leading to speculation over the Maldives’ strategic alignments. However, the latest interactions suggest a renewed emphasis on India-Maldives cooperation rooted in mutual respect and shared regional interests.
Security collaboration also featured prominently in the discussions. India reaffirmed its commitment to assist the Maldives in enhancing its coastal security infrastructure, personnel training, and disaster response capabilities.
The visit is expected to pave the way for greater political trust and economic engagement between the two nations. With India’s continued developmental assistance and Maldives’ recognition of its importance, analysts believe the bilateral relationship is entering a more stable and constructive phase.
As India seeks to strengthen its influence in the Indian Ocean region amid shifting geopolitical currents, the reaffirmation of ties with the Maldives signals a positive trajectory in regional diplomacy.
