Lok Sabha Passes Bill Banning Real-Money Online Games

Lok Sabha bans online gaming

August 21,2025: The Lok Sabha has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, imposing a nationwide ban on digital games played with real money.

The Bill was introduced and cleared within minutes, drawing criticism from some Opposition members who argued that there was insufficient debate. Despite the protests, the measure was adopted by voice vote.

The new law prohibits fantasy sports, poker, and other money-based online contests. Advertisements for such games will no longer be permitted, and financial institutions will be instructed to stop processing related payments.

The legislation also sets up a central authority to supervise lawful categories, including e-sports, educational platforms, and social gaming. Breaches of the law will attract strict penalties, including fines and jail terms.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who presented the Bill, said the government’s aim was to protect young people and families from gambling addiction and financial harm. He added that discussions with industry groups had been held over several years.

The impact on the online gaming industry is expected to be immediate. Popular platforms such as Dream11, MPL, and PokerBaazi may be forced to suspend operations. Market reaction was sharp, with shares of Nazara Technologies falling heavily after the announcement.

Analysts warn that the decision could lead to job losses and reduce foreign investment in the sector. Estimates suggest that billions of dollars in projected inflows may now be at risk.

The Bill will next be taken up in the Rajya Sabha. Once it clears both Houses and receives presidential approval, the ban will come into force across the country.
