Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that India will require forty to fifty astronauts in the coming years to support the nation’s human spaceflight programme. He made the remarks during a review of the country’s space initiatives.
At present, four Indian Air Force pilots are undergoing training for the Gaganyaan mission. Initial training was completed abroad, and advanced preparation is taking place in India. Officials noted that this number is insufficient for the projected scale of future missions.
The Prime Minister highlighted that upcoming projects, including an Indian space station and long-duration missions, will necessitate a larger corps of trained astronauts. Plans are being made to establish local facilities to provide regular and comprehensive astronaut training.
Experts said that other spacefaring nations maintain a substantial number of trained crew members to ensure continuity in missions. India, they added, must similarly expand its cadre to meet the growing requirements of its space programme.
The first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan, is scheduled for 2025. Three astronauts will travel to low Earth orbit and return safely to Earth. Additional astronaut selection and training will follow to meet the needs of future missions.
India’s space programme has made several notable achievements in recent years, including the successful lunar landing of Chandrayaan-3 and the launch of the Aditya-L1 mission to study the Sun. Officials stated that the proposed space station, targeted for 2035, will require a constant rotation of trained astronauts.
Cooperation with international space agencies is also being explored to enhance training and operational expertise. Officials said that discussions are ongoing with several foreign partners to exchange knowledge and best practices.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that expanding the astronaut programme will encourage young Indians to pursue careers in science and technology. He noted that the development of a capable workforce is essential to ensure India’s sustained presence in space.
The plan to develop forty to fifty astronauts will be implemented gradually over the next decade. Government sources said this initiative is necessary for maintaining India’s position in human space exploration and meeting the demands of multiple upcoming missions.
