Lucknow: In a major achievement under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, Lucknow has become the first city in Uttar Pradesh to be declared a Zero-Dump City. This milestone was achieved after the complete clearance of over 12 lakh tonnes of legacy waste and the implementation of a scientific waste management system across all wards.
The announcement was made by officials of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), who confirmed that no untreated solid waste is now being dumped in open areas within city limits. All waste generated is being scientifically processed, either through recycling, composting, or waste-to-energy conversion.
Municipal Commissioner Indramani Tripathi stated that this success was the result of months of planning, citizen involvement, and infrastructure upgrades. “This is not just about clearing dumps. It’s about building a culture of sustainability. Every household, every ward played its part,” he said.
As part of the initiative, the LMC deployed GPS-enabled vehicles for door-to-door waste collection, ensured 100% source segregation, and operationalized Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) along with organic composting plants in different zones of the city.
The city’s transformation has been recognized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), which appreciated Lucknow’s commitment to the government’s Garbage-Free Cities goal.
Environmentalists have also welcomed the development. Dr. Radhika Sharma, a senior urban sustainability researcher, said, “This is a landmark moment. With Lucknow reducing its landfill dependency, we expect a significant drop in pollution levels and an improvement in public health indicators.”
Citizens of Lucknow have also expressed pride in the city’s accomplishment. “We are proud that Lucknow is leading by example. Clean surroundings have become part of our lifestyle now,” said Anjali Mishra, a resident of Alambagh.
The LMC has announced plans to maintain this status by integrating AI-based tracking systems, encouraging community participation, and offering incentives for waste segregation. Regular audits and public awareness drives will continue to ensure that the city remains garbage-free.
With this achievement, Lucknow sets a benchmark for other cities in the state and across India, reinforcing the importance of urban sustainability and collective civic responsibility.
