Orange Alert Issued for Pune as IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall Across Maharashtra

Pune weather update

Pune, June 30: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pune and several other districts in Maharashtra, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days due to intensified monsoon activity.

As per IMD’s latest bulletin, the orange alert will remain in effect from June 30 to July 2. During this period, regions including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Satara, Kolhapur, and Sindhudurg are likely to receive rainfall ranging between 115 mm and 204 mm within 24 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are also expected in isolated locations.

Officials have urged the public to remain alert and avoid travel in vulnerable areas, especially where there is a risk of flooding or landslides. District administrations have been instructed to take precautionary measures and ensure emergency services are prepared.

Meteorologists stated that the enhanced rainfall is due to the strengthening of the southwest monsoon over the Arabian Sea, along with a low-pressure system developing over central India. These conditions are expected to bring widespread rainfall, particularly in the western and coastal belts of Maharashtra.

In Pune, the municipal authorities have started implementing safety measures. These include cleaning of drains to prevent urban flooding, placing emergency teams on standby, and issuing advisories for residents to remain indoors during peak rainfall hours.

The city’s traffic control department is also monitoring flood-prone locations to manage vehicle movement effectively. In addition, schools and colleges have been advised to remain cautious and consider transitioning to online classes if the weather situation worsens.

The agriculture department has also cautioned farmers in affected regions to take preventive steps to safeguard their crops from excessive rainfall, waterlogging, and potential erosion.

Over the years, similar weather events have led to disruptions such as flash floods, landslides in hilly areas, and water accumulation in urban zones. The IMD has emphasized the importance of preparedness and advised citizens to stay informed through official weather updates and local administration bulletins.

With more rain forecast over the next 72 hours, residents across Maharashtra are being urged to cooperate with authorities and follow safety protocols.
