June 30, 2025 — In a significant boost to Pune’s urban transit infrastructure, the Maharashtra government has given the much-anticipated green signal for Phase 2 of the Pune Metro project. As part of the expansion plan, Pune Metro will soon add 15 new trains to its fleet, enhancing the city’s capacity to cater to the growing number of commuters and ensuring smoother, more efficient connectivity across the metropolitan area.
The approval for Phase 2 underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development and improved public transportation. The second phase will extend the Metro network by over 82 kilometers, encompassing new corridors that will connect key areas such as Wagholi, Chandni Chowk, and Katraj, thus bridging the gaps left in the first phase and addressing the transit needs of expanding suburbs.
15 New Trains to Strengthen Fleet
The addition of 15 new trains—each equipped with modern facilities and advanced safety systems—is expected to significantly increase passenger capacity and reduce waiting times. Officials from MahaMetro, the agency overseeing the Metro project, confirmed that procurement and manufacturing will begin shortly. These trains will be manufactured under the Make in India initiative, ensuring domestic job creation and alignment with national industrial policies.
“The expansion of Pune Metro under Phase 2, along with the new trains, marks a transformative moment for the city’s transportation landscape. We aim to provide fast, safe, and eco-friendly mobility solutions to every Punekar,” said Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of MahaMetro.
Strategic Expansion to Reduce Road Congestion
Pune, known for its rapid urban growth and burgeoning tech industry, has been grappling with increasing vehicular traffic and pollution. Phase 2 of the Metro is projected to serve over 10 lakh (1 million) passengers daily upon completion, significantly cutting down road congestion and carbon emissions.
Urban planners and transportation experts have welcomed the move, citing it as a long-overdue development to accommodate Pune’s expanding population. With corridors stretching into less-connected residential areas and employment hubs, the Metro aims to become the backbone of the city’s public transport system.
Central and State Support Drives Progress
The estimated cost of the Phase 2 expansion stands at ₹10,500 crore, which will be jointly funded by the central and state governments, along with international lending agencies. The Centre had already cleared the project in principle earlier this year, and the state government’s recent nod has cleared the way for tendering and groundwork to begin by early 2026.
Public feedback has also been largely positive, with many citizens hopeful that the extended Metro service will ease their daily commute and improve the overall quality of life in the city.
With the approval of Phase 2 and the procurement of 15 new trains, Pune Metro is poised to become one of the most efficient and comprehensive urban rail systems in India.
