Pune to Get Dedicated Cancer Hospital; Land Identified Near Sassoon Hospital: Minister Misal

Usha Misal cancer hospital announcement

June 30,2025 — In a significant boost to Maharashtra’s healthcare infrastructure, Pune is set to get a dedicated cancer hospital, with land identified near Sassoon General Hospital for the project. The announcement was made by State Minister Usha Misal during her visit to the city on Sunday.

Speaking to the media, Misal said that the land near Sassoon Hospital has been earmarked for the proposed facility, which will cater specifically to cancer patients. “Considering the rising number of cancer cases in the region, a specialized hospital was a long-standing need. We have now identified suitable land near Sassoon General Hospital and the planning process is underway,” she said.

The cancer hospital is expected to be a state-of-the-art facility equipped with departments for medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation therapy, and palliative care. It will also include a diagnostics and research wing, aimed at early detection and advanced treatment.

Officials in the Maharashtra Health Department confirmed that the location near Sassoon Hospital was chosen due to its strategic centrality and existing medical infrastructure. Proximity to public transport facilities such as Pune Railway Station is also expected to ensure easy accessibility for patients.

At present, Pune lacks a government-run standalone cancer facility. Patients are either treated at oncology departments in general hospitals or forced to seek costly treatment at private institutions. The new hospital is expected to offer accessible and affordable cancer care, particularly benefiting economically weaker sections.

Medical experts have welcomed the announcement. Dr. Meera Joshi, a leading oncologist, stated, “This is a much-needed initiative. A dedicated cancer hospital in Pune will significantly improve early detection and treatment, especially for rural and semi-urban populations that come to the city for care.”

The hospital will also create employment opportunities for healthcare professionals, technicians, and support staff. The government is reportedly seeking central assistance under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) for the project.

While the government has not provided a specific timeline for construction, Misal assured that the project is being treated as a high priority. “We are working to complete all administrative approvals and expect to move to the construction phase soon,” she added.

The initiative is seen as part of a broader effort by the Maharashtra government to strengthen healthcare services across urban and semi-urban areas. The dedicated cancer hospital in Pune is expected to become a regional center for comprehensive cancer treatment and research in western India.
