Maharashtra CM Announces ₹5 Lakh Compensation for Families of Pune Bridge Collapse Victims

Pune bridge collapse

June 17, 2025 — In response to the recent bridge collapse in Pune that led to multiple fatalities, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has declared financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim. The tragic incident has triggered a statewide discussion on infrastructure safety and emergency preparedness during the monsoon season.

The collapse occurred late Sunday night when a portion of the bridge gave way, reportedly due to continuous rainfall and potential structural weaknesses. Several people fell into the water body below, and emergency services were immediately dispatched to carry out rescue operations. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire department, and local authorities are continuing efforts to locate and assist those affected.

Chief Minister Shinde expressed his condolences to the grieving families and emphasized the government’s commitment to their welfare. “An ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh will be provided to the families who lost their loved ones. Additionally, the government will ensure that the injured receive full medical treatment at no cost,” he stated.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the site of the collapse on Monday and held discussions with district officials overseeing the relief efforts. He directed that a detailed investigation be carried out to determine the exact cause of the incident and assured that strict action would be taken against any negligence found on part of contractors or government departments.

Initial reports have raised questions about the structural integrity of the bridge, which had reportedly not undergone recent safety evaluations. Citizens and civic groups have voiced concern about the condition of aging public infrastructure across Pune and other urban centers, particularly as heavy monsoon rains increase the risk of such disasters.

Opposition leaders have criticized the state administration, calling for a thorough review and audit of bridges and key structures throughout Maharashtra. They argue that better maintenance and timely inspections could have prevented the incident and saved lives.

In response, the state government has announced the formation of a high-level committee tasked with conducting an inquiry into the bridge collapse. The committee is expected to present its findings within 15 days, with recommendations for preventive action across other vulnerable structures in the region.

As rescue and recovery operations continue, the focus has now shifted to both immediate relief for the affected families and long-term solutions to address infrastructure deficiencies. The tragic event has served as a stark reminder of the urgent need for proactive governance and disaster preparedness, especially in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.
