In response to a widely circulated video showing a solo woman biker being harassed during her journey in Uttarakhand, Meerut Police have arrested three individuals linked to the incident. The video, which triggered nationwide condemnation, showed the woman being followed and verbally harassed by a group of men in a car.
The incident came to light earlier this week when a video clip began circulating on various social media platforms. In the footage, a group of men could be seen trailing the woman’s motorcycle, making inappropriate remarks, recording her without consent, and attempting to intimidate her while she rode along a hilly stretch.
Public outcry over the incident quickly escalated, with online users tagging police authorities and demanding immediate action using hashtags like #JusticeForBikerGirl and #SafeTravelsForWomen. Several biker communities and women’s rights organizations also amplified calls for justice.
Acting on the video and digital evidence, Uttarakhand Police traced the vehicle shown in the footage to Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. A collaborative effort between Uttarakhand and Meerut Police led to the identification and arrest of three suspects from the Lisari Gate locality of Meerut on June 19.
Confirming the development, Meerut SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan said, “The accused have been taken into custody and interrogated. They have acknowledged their involvement in the incident. Appropriate legal action is being initiated under applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code.”
The woman involved, who is known for documenting her solo biking journeys online, issued a statement thanking authorities and the public for their support. “The situation was deeply unsettling, but the support I received helped me stand up and speak out,” she said, urging women not to remain silent in the face of such behavior.
Authorities are pursuing charges under multiple IPC sections, including 354D (stalking), 509 (insulting a woman’s modesty), and 506 (criminal intimidation). Cybercrime charges may also be added for unauthorized filming and online circulation of the incident.
The episode has reignited the discussion around safety for solo women travelers and the responsibilities of bystanders and law enforcement. Advocates are calling for improved surveillance on tourist routes and faster response mechanisms for reported harassment.
Police officials have urged citizens not to circulate the video further, emphasizing the importance of protecting the woman’s identity and privacy. The matter remains under investigation, and further legal action is expected in the coming days.
This prompt police action is being viewed as a strong message against harassment, reinforcing the accountability of those who target women in public spaces.
