SpaceX Starship 36 Explodes on Launch Pad During Pre-Launch Test in Texas

A major incident occurred at SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch facility on Thursday when the Starship 36 prototype exploded during a static fire test. The explosion took place just hours before the vehicle was scheduled for a full orbital launch rehearsal, marking a significant setback for the company’s ambitious spaceflight program.

According to SpaceX, the explosion happened during engine ignition procedures. Video footage from the site showed a sudden burst of flames followed by a loud blast that sent smoke and debris across the launch pad. No injuries were reported, and SpaceX has confirmed that all personnel were safely evacuated and that emergency protocols were followed.

“Starship 36 experienced an anomaly during a routine static fire test. The team is currently investigating the cause of the incident,” SpaceX said in a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the reliability of the Starship launch system, which is central to SpaceX’s long-term vision of enabling human missions to the Moon and Mars. The Starship-Super Heavy configuration is designed to be a fully reusable, heavy-lift rocket capable of carrying both crew and cargo into deep space. The failure of Starship 36 is the latest in a series of technical challenges that the program has faced in recent months.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that it is monitoring the situation and will lead a full investigation into the cause of the explosion. “No public safety issues have been reported, and the site remains secure,” the FAA said in a press release. It is expected that future Starship tests will be delayed until the investigation is complete and all safety concerns are addressed.

Aerial images show visible damage to the launch pad infrastructure, including scorch marks and debris scattered around the base. Cleanup and damage assessment operations have already begun at the Boca Chica site.

Despite the failure, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk remained positive about the company’s progress. In a statement posted to X, Musk said, “These failures are part of the testing process. We’ll identify the issue and be back with improved systems very soon.”

Starship 36 was one of the most advanced prototypes to date and was expected to play a key role in the upcoming orbital test campaign. SpaceX had previously announced plans for a July 2025 launch window, though that timeline is now uncertain.

With the FAA’s involvement and continued scrutiny from the aerospace industry, the explosion of Starship 36 highlights both the immense challenges and high stakes of modern space exploration.
