2 July, 2025-A large-scale mock drill was carried out along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Tuesday as part of heightened security measures for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. The exercise was conducted by joint forces to assess their preparedness in responding to potential terror threats during the annual pilgrimage.
The simulation involved coordinated efforts from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indian Army, and other paramilitary forces. During the drill, a simulated terrorist attack on a convoy of pilgrims was enacted, allowing security agencies to test emergency protocols, rapid response capabilities, and inter-agency communication.
To ensure accuracy and avoid public disruption, traffic on select segments of the highway was temporarily halted. Teams conducted evacuation drills, bomb detection operations, and perimeter lockdowns, while surveillance drones and armored vehicles were deployed as part of the response strategy.
Officials stated that such mock drills are critical in enhancing the overall security grid for the Amarnath Yatra, which began on June 29 and is scheduled to continue until August 13. “These exercises help identify gaps and ensure our preparedness remains sharp at all times,” a senior security official said.
Given past security challenges in the region and recent incidents that have raised concern, authorities are leaving no room for complacency. Intelligence inputs indicating possible threats have led to a significant boost in security infrastructure this year. Over 50,000 personnel have been deployed across the yatra route, including vulnerable areas along the highway and at higher altitudes.
Modern surveillance systems, including drone monitoring, facial recognition tools, and RFID-based tracking for registered pilgrims, are actively in use. Additionally, quick response teams and mobile medical units have been stationed at key locations to handle any emergencies efficiently.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has been closely monitoring developments and has reviewed security arrangements multiple times since the pilgrimage began. Daily coordination meetings are being held among all stakeholders to ensure seamless execution of security protocols.
Apart from counter-terror strategies, the administration is also focusing on public cooperation. Pilgrims have been advised to follow all safety guidelines, cooperate with security personnel, and report any suspicious activity. Awareness campaigns and signages have been placed throughout the route to help devotees navigate safely.
Tuesday’s drill is one of several planned throughout the Yatra season. It reflects the authorities’ proactive stance in dealing with the threat landscape and ensuring that devotees can undertake their spiritual journey without fear or disruption.
As the Amarnath Yatra progresses into its peak period, these security exercises play a vital role in strengthening the region’s counter-terrorism framework and in safeguarding one of the country’s most significant religious events.
