The unusual setting reflected the personal warmth between the two leaders and placed renewed focus on India’s appeal for peace in Ukraine.
According to officials, the conversation touched on a wide spectrum of issues, but Modi underlined that the ongoing war in Ukraine must end through dialogue. He stressed that humanity’s priority is a “lasting peace” and said India supports any initiative that contributes to stability in the region.
The limousine meeting followed Modi’s recent call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which he conveyed a similar message. Energy security and trade formed another major part of the discussion. Russia has become India’s largest supplier of seaborne crude, a factor that pushed bilateral trade to almost USD 69 billion in the last financial year. Both countries have set a target of USD 100 billion by 2030. Officials noted that cooperation in fertilizers, defense, cultural exchanges, and space exploration also featured in the talks.
The meeting came as New Delhi faces heightened economic pressure from Washington, which recently imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods, citing the country’s growing oil trade with Moscow. Despite these external challenges, both Modi and Putin signaled that their partnership would remain resilient and adaptive.
Diplomatic observers say the limousine conversation carried symbolic weight. By inviting Modi into his Aurus limousine and addressing him as a close friend, Putin highlighted the trust underpinning India–Russia relations. At the same time, Modi’s insistence on peace in Ukraine reinforced India’s independent foreign policy and its role as a country seeking balanced engagement in global affairs.
The unusual 45-minute exchange is likely to be remembered not only for its symbolism but also for the strategic clarity it projected. For India, it reaffirmed an approach that combines economic pragmatism with a consistent call for dialogue and peace in one of the world’s most pressing conflicts.
