Nepal PM K.P. Sharma Oli Resigns Amid Youth-Led Protests

Nepal PM resigns

September 9, 2025 — Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday following days of nationwide protests that turned deadly and drew the participation of thousands of young demonstrators. The agitation, described as “Gen-Z protests,” was sparked by widespread anger over corruption allegations and recent restrictions on internet freedom. His decision to step down came shortly after reports that the Chief of Army Staff advised him to quit to prevent further escalation of unrest across the country.

The protests, which began in Kathmandu, rapidly spread to major cities including Pokhara, Biratnagar, and Lalitpur. What started as peaceful demonstrations soon escalated into violent clashes between protesters and security forces. At least seven people have been confirmed dead, and more than 300 others have been injured in confrontations over the past week. Despite attempts by the government to impose internet blackouts, social media platforms remained central in mobilizing and uniting young voices against the administration.

Oli, who had been serving his third term as Prime Minister, faced increasing criticism not only from opposition parties but also from within his own party. Analysts say the resignation became unavoidable after he lost public trust as well as institutional backing. Political commentator Rajendra Adhikari noted that the movement symbolized a generational shift in Nepal’s politics, where young citizens are now demanding accountability, transparency, and freedom of expression.

Regional observers have reacted cautiously to the developments. India’s Ministry of External Affairs called for peace and dialogue, emphasizing the importance of stability in Nepal. China, another key partner, expressed hopes for a smooth political transition. International human rights organizations have welcomed Oli’s resignation, calling it a victory for freedom of speech and civil rights.

The resignation has left Nepal’s political future uncertain. The ruling coalition is expected to hold discussions in the coming days to appoint an interim leader until fresh elections can be organized. Opposition groups, encouraged by the protests, are pushing for reforms aimed at improving transparency and limiting corruption. For many of the demonstrators, however, the departure of the Prime Minister is seen only as the beginning of a broader struggle to change the political system.

Speaking from the protest site in Kathmandu, 22-year-old student activist Anusha Shrestha said that the movement is not about a single leader but about reshaping Nepal’s governance. “We want accountability, jobs, and freedom. This is not just about Oli—it’s about the future of our generation,” she said.

The resignation of K.P. Sharma Oli highlights a turning point in Nepal’s democratic journey. As the country now enters a phase of political transition, the voice of its younger generation will likely continue to define the pace and direction of change.
