August 22, 2025: OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, will open its first office in India later this year, selecting New Delhi as the location for its operations. This development is part of the company’s global expansion strategy and its effort to engage more directly with the Indian technology ecosystem.
The firm has completed registration as a legal entity in India and has started hiring staff locally. The new office will act as a hub for collaboration with Indian businesses, developers, policymakers, and users, emphasizing India’s increasing importance in the global AI landscape.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, highlighted that the New Delhi office will help the company better understand the local market and establish partnerships with regional technology stakeholders. “Having a local presence allows us to engage more closely with Indian users and contribute to the development of AI solutions tailored to their needs,” he said.
In line with this expansion, OpenAI has introduced a cost-effective ChatGPT subscription in India priced at $4.60 per month. There are also reports that the company is considering setting up data centers in India, which would strengthen its infrastructure and improve service delivery across the region.
Analysts say that India, with nearly one billion internet users and a rapidly evolving digital ecosystem, offers significant opportunities for AI companies. OpenAI’s entry is expected to foster innovation by encouraging collaboration with local developers and startups.
The establishment of the New Delhi office marks a significant milestone in OpenAI’s efforts to strengthen its presence in Asia. The company aims to combine global expertise with local insights to make AI technologies more accessible and relevant to Indian users.
