7 July, 2025-Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged BRICS nations to collaborate on developing and deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly, highlighting its transformative potential and the ethical challenges it poses. Addressing the leaders’ session of the BRICS Summit, Modi emphasized the need for a collective effort to ensure AI technologies are used for the greater good and not for exploitation or harm.
The Prime Minister said that India is already applying AI across key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and governance. He noted that the country’s AI initiatives are built around inclusivity, safety, and transparency, aiming to bridge the digital divide rather than deepen it.
“India is harnessing AI for social empowerment,” Modi said, outlining how predictive AI tools are helping Indian farmers make better crop decisions and how AI-based diagnostics are enhancing access to healthcare in remote regions. He added that AI-driven platforms in education are helping personalize learning experiences, while in governance, AI is improving efficiency and public service delivery.
Calling AI both a powerful opportunity and a significant responsibility, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of ensuring that its use aligns with democratic values. He raised concerns about algorithmic bias, data misuse, and misinformation, and proposed that BRICS countries work together to establish ethical frameworks for AI regulation.
“Let us work together for responsible AI,” Modi stated, urging the BRICS grouping to invest in joint research, cross-border data cooperation, and skill development to build a secure and inclusive AI ecosystem.
Modi also referenced India’s leadership role in global AI initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). He invited BRICS members to collaborate on these platforms to drive innovation that is ethical, equitable, and human-centric.
The appeal for responsible AI governance comes amid growing international concern over unregulated AI development and its implications for privacy, employment, and security. Modi’s remarks received acknowledgment from several BRICS leaders, who echoed the need for multilateral cooperation on digital governance.
With AI set to play a central role in global development strategies, Modi’s call adds momentum to efforts aimed at shaping a global consensus on the responsible use of emerging technologies.
