7 July, 2025-Former U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly criticized Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s proposal to launch a new political outfit named the “America Party,” calling the idea “ridiculous” and accusing Musk of attempting to divide conservative voters for personal gain.
The remarks come amid growing public friction between the two former allies, with Trump stating that Musk’s move is “foolish and selfish” and will only benefit the Democrats in upcoming elections. In a recent interview and subsequent Truth Social post, Trump said, “All Elon is doing is helping the Democrats. It’s ridiculous. We don’t need billionaires dividing the vote for personal glory.”
Musk, who has increasingly voiced dissatisfaction with both the Democratic and Republican parties, recently floated the concept of the “America Party” on his social media platform, X. He described it as a centrist political force intended to unify voters tired of what he called “extremism and corruption on both sides.”
Sources close to Musk claim the billionaire is seriously exploring the idea, viewing it as a platform for pragmatic and innovation-driven governance. “He genuinely believes the America Party can disrupt the broken two-party system and offer voters a new direction,” said a Musk associate familiar with the matter.
Trump and Musk once maintained a cooperative relationship, with Musk serving on Trump’s business advisory councils during his presidency. However, the relationship began to deteriorate after Musk’s resignation in 2017 over the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. The divide widened in recent years, especially after Musk criticized Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 election results and expressed concern over his political rhetoric.
Political analysts suggest that a third-party initiative like Musk’s could significantly alter the 2026 and 2028 electoral landscapes. A Musk-backed movement may attract moderate conservatives, independents, and younger voters, potentially drawing support away from Republican candidates.
Conservative strategists have expressed alarm over the possible consequences of Musk’s plans. “A third party, especially one with Musk’s resources and visibility, could split the conservative vote and hand key victories to the Democrats,” said a senior GOP consultant.
