PM Modi to Hold Rally in Durgapur Ahead of TMC’s Martyrs’ Day Observance

PM Modi rally Durgapur

July 18,2025:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a large public rally in Durgapur today, just three days before the Trinamool Congress (TMC) holds its annual Martyrs’ Day event on July 21 in Kolkata. The rally is seen as a significant political maneuver by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to boost its presence in West Bengal and counter the TMC’s political messaging.

Extensive preparations have been made for the event, with party workers mobilized from surrounding districts. Security arrangements have also been tightened, given the scale of the gathering and the political weight the event carries. This is Prime Minister Modi’s first major visit to the state since the formation of the new NDA government earlier this year.

During the rally, the Prime Minister is expected to speak on the Centre’s ongoing and upcoming development initiatives in West Bengal, particularly focusing on infrastructure, industry, and public welfare schemes. He is also likely to address concerns around governance, corruption, and political violence, positioning the BJP as a credible alternative to the ruling TMC.

The timing of the rally is particularly noteworthy. It comes just before TMC’s Martyrs’ Day event—an annual commemoration of the 1993 Kolkata incident in which 13 party workers lost their lives during a protest. The day holds symbolic significance for the TMC and is used to showcase its grassroots strength and connect with supporters across the state.

Political analysts interpret PM Modi’s rally as a strategic counter to the TMC’s narrative. With West Bengal being a politically crucial state and holding 42 Lok Sabha seats, both parties have already begun strengthening their outreach ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections and the 2029 General Elections.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit, stating that it would energize party workers and reaffirm the BJP’s commitment to the people of Bengal. “The people of the state are looking for a change in governance, and this rally is a message that the BJP is ready to deliver it,” Adhikari said.

The TMC, meanwhile, has stated that its July 21 event will once again demonstrate the party’s deep public connect and popular support under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Senior TMC leaders have also dismissed the BJP’s rally as a political stunt aimed at diverting attention from central issues.

As political activity intensifies in the state, both the BJP and TMC are preparing for high-stakes battles in the coming years. The Durgapur rally, followed closely by the Martyrs’ Day event, is expected to offer a glimpse into the emerging political narratives that could shape the future of West Bengal’s electoral landscape.
