July 18, 2025 —
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal on Friday, marking his first trip to the state following the appointment of Samik Bhattacharya as the new president of the BJP’s state unit. The Prime Minister’s itinerary includes the launch of development projects worth approximately ₹5,000 crore and a major public rally in Durgapur.
This visit comes at a critical political juncture, as the BJP looks to strengthen its presence in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The projects scheduled for inauguration span various sectors, including infrastructure, transportation, energy, and urban development, with a particular focus on the industrial belt in and around Durgapur.
Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed that the development package is part of a broader push to boost economic activity and employment in the region. The projects are expected to improve regional connectivity, enhance logistics infrastructure, and stimulate growth in both urban and rural areas.
One of the key components of the launch includes initiatives under the Centre’s ‘PM Gati Shakti’ mission, aimed at integrating infrastructure planning and execution across ministries and departments. Additionally, proposals related to railway upgrades and power distribution enhancements are expected to be formally announced.
The Prime Minister will also address a public gathering in Durgapur, where he is likely to speak on the Centre’s commitment to West Bengal’s development and emphasize the importance of infrastructure in driving economic progress. BJP leaders view the rally as an opportunity to engage with the electorate and signal the party’s renewed focus on the state.
This will be PM Modi’s first visit to Bengal since the BJP’s organizational reshuffle earlier this month. The elevation of Samik Bhattacharya is seen as a strategic move to energize the party base and prepare for the electoral challenges ahead. Senior party leaders believe the Prime Minister’s presence will provide a significant boost to their grassroots campaign.
Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised concerns about the intent behind the visit, suggesting that the timing is politically motivated. However, BJP functionaries have dismissed the criticism, stating that the Centre’s initiatives are focused solely on the welfare and long-term growth of the state.
With political activity in the state gaining momentum, the Prime Minister’s visit is being viewed as a launchpad for the BJP’s outreach efforts in the lead-up to 2026. Apart from project inaugurations, the visit is also expected to include internal party meetings and discussions with local leadership.
As West Bengal continues to be a key battleground state, PM Modi’s tour is set to make headlines not only for the scale of development projects but also for its broader political implications.
