July 18, 2025 — In a significant step towards restoring civic infrastructure, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced a road redevelopment project across the metro construction corridor from Maan to Shivajinagar. The roads, extensively damaged due to the ongoing Pune Metro project, will undergo phased repairs to ensure smoother and safer travel for commuters.
The affected stretch covers several key residential and commercial zones including Hinjawadi, Baner, Aundh, and the University area. With heavy machinery movement, trenching, and repeated utility works during metro construction, these roads have developed potholes, uneven surfaces, and damaged drainage systems. The redevelopment aims to restore road conditions while improving long-term durability.
PMRDA officials stated that the work will include full-scale resurfacing, upgrading of drainage lines, realignment of underground utilities, and installation of pedestrian pathways. Special attention will be paid to stormwater management to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon.
To ensure long-lasting results, modern materials such as high-grade bitumen and reinforced road bases will be used. The authority also plans to implement improved road design features, including proper slopes, signage, and lane demarcations, in accordance with current urban development norms.
The entire redevelopment is estimated to cost ₹120 crore and will be implemented in multiple phases to avoid large-scale traffic disruptions. The first phase will cover the stretch from Balewadi to Savitribai Phule Pune University and is expected to commence in August 2025. Completion is targeted before the onset of the monsoon season in 2026.
Coordination between PMRDA, MahaMetro, and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will be key in ensuring timely and efficient execution. Officials emphasized that all agencies are working together to minimize inconvenience to the public during the repair process.
Urban planners and local residents have welcomed the move, noting that post-construction restoration is critical to maintain the livability and mobility of fast-growing urban areas like Pune. With the Pune Metro line nearing operational readiness in this corridor, upgraded roads are expected to complement the new transit infrastructure.
The PMRDA’s redevelopment plan is seen as a crucial step in enhancing Pune’s transport network and easing the daily travel experience for thousands of commuters who rely on this important route.
