Bhupesh Baghel’s Son Arrested on Birthday Amid ED Raids; Former CM Reacts with Sarcasm

July 18,2025: Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on his birthday following fresh raids at the Baghel family residence in Bhilai. The arrest comes amid an ongoing probe into alleged money laundering cases linked to the previous Congress-led state government.

The ED conducted early morning searches at the residence of the Baghel family on Thursday, just months after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had raided the same location in March in connection with an alleged coal levy scam. While the March raids primarily focused on Bhupesh Baghel himself, Thursday’s operation culminated in the arrest of his son, raising questions about the broader scope of the investigation.

Sources in the ED stated that the arrest is part of a larger investigation involving suspicious financial transactions and potential kickbacks received during the tenure of the previous government. Several documents, electronic devices, and financial records were reportedly seized during the search. An official statement detailing the charges against Chaitanya Baghel is expected soon.

Reacting to the arrest, Bhupesh Baghel issued a strongly worded social media post, accusing the central government of political vendetta. In a sarcastic message in Hindi, he wrote, “Aaj mere bete ka janamdin hai. Kendra sarkar ki taraf se kya uphaar mila, ED ki giraftari!” (“Today is my son’s birthday. What gift did the central government give? Arrest by the ED!”). The former CM alleged that such actions were part of a sustained campaign to target opposition leaders using central agencies.

The Congress party condemned the arrest, calling it a “blatant misuse of power” by the BJP-led central government. Senior Congress leaders claimed that the action was politically motivated and aimed at weakening the opposition ahead of upcoming civic and assembly elections in the state.

In contrast, BJP leaders defended the ED’s action, stating that the law is taking its course and no one is above investigation. They emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in governance, regardless of political affiliations.

Chaitanya Baghel’s arrest has added fuel to the ongoing political tensions in Chhattisgarh, a state that has seen frequent clashes between the BJP and the Congress, both in terms of policy and public discourse. The development is expected to have a significant impact on the political narrative in the state in the coming weeks.

The ED is continuing its probe, and further arrests or disclosures may follow as part of the larger investigation into alleged financial irregularities under the previous state administration.
