Pune: PMPML Starts Distribution of Free and Subsidised Bus Passes for Students Within PMC Limits

Pune free bus pass

Pune, June 20, 2025 — The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has officially begun the distribution of free and subsidised bus passes for students residing within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits. The initiative, which kicked off earlier this week, is expected to benefit thousands of school and college students as the new academic year begins.

The scheme, announced in the PMC’s 2024–25 budget, aims to reduce transportation costs for students and promote the use of public transport. According to PMPML officials, students studying in government and PMC-aided schools are eligible for 100% free travel on PMPML buses operating within PMC limits. Meanwhile, students enrolled in private institutions can avail themselves of subsidised passes at reduced rates.

Eligible students must provide a valid school or college ID along with address proof showing residence within PMC limits. Applications can be submitted at designated PMPML pass centres or through the official online portal.

PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Sachindra Pratap Singh said, “This scheme is designed to encourage students to use public transport. It reduces the financial burden on families and supports sustainable urban mobility by discouraging the use of private vehicles.”

The scheme covers regular PMPML buses as well as services running on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridors. Officials expect a significant rise in daily student ridership following the implementation of this scheme, which may also improve overall public transport usage in the city.

Parents have welcomed the initiative, calling it a much-needed relief. “With the rising cost of living, this scheme helps us save on monthly travel expenses,” said Swati Jadhav, a parent of two schoolchildren.

PMPML has also set up help desks at major depots and busy bus stops to assist students and parents in the application process. Authorities have urged applicants to apply early to avoid long queues and delays.

The PMC is reportedly considering extending similar benefits to other vulnerable groups, including senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, under its inclusive transport policy.

The PMPML’s free and subsidised student bus pass initiative is being viewed as a significant step towards making Pune’s public transport system more inclusive, affordable, and eco-friendly.
