PUNE, June 20 — A young man was dramatically rescued after being trapped in the flooded Indrayani River in Alandi on Wednesday evening. The man reportedly clung to tree roots for nearly an hour as strong river currents threatened to sweep him away.
According to officials, the incident occurred after heavy rainfall in the Pune district led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Indrayani River. The man, said to be in his early twenties, had entered the riverbank area when he was suddenly caught in the rising waters. Unable to make his way back, he was swept downstream and managed to grab onto exposed tree roots near the riverbank.
Local residents who witnessed the scene immediately alerted emergency services. A joint rescue operation was launched by the Alandi Municipal Council and Fire Department, with support from local volunteers. Rescue personnel used ropes and life jackets to reach the stranded youth. After nearly 45 minutes of intense effort, he was successfully pulled to safety.
“This was a very risky operation,” said a rescue team member. “The current was extremely strong, and the man was completely exhausted by the time we reached him. It’s a miracle he held on for so long.”
The incident comes amid a yellow alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Pune and surrounding areas, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days. Civic authorities have urged citizens to avoid venturing near water bodies during the monsoon season due to the danger of flash floods and strong currents.
Alandi, a popular pilgrimage site located about 25 km from Pune city, sees a large number of visitors throughout the year, especially during religious events. Following the incident, authorities have stepped up patrols and issued fresh advisories to ensure the safety of residents and tourists near riverbanks.
Environmental experts have also reiterated the need for public awareness about the risks associated with sudden water level changes during the monsoon.
