Pune Police have successfully implemented an AI-based alert system to enhance safety and security during recent festival celebrations. The system, designed to operate under strict crime branch supervision, generated over 8 lakh real-time alerts and flagged approximately 250 individuals with prior criminal records, marking a significant advancement in public safety technology.
The AI-based surveillance system, part of Pune Police’s Smart City initiative, uses advanced algorithms to monitor crowd movement, detect unusual activities, and instantly alert law enforcement officials. This system was actively used during high-traffic festival events, including Ganesh Chaturthi and Ganesh Visarjan, where crowd density and public safety concerns are at their peak.
According to Pune Police officials, the system’s ability to process vast amounts of real-time data has been a game-changer. “The AI alert system enables us to quickly identify potential threats and take preventive action,” said an official from the Pune Police Crime Branch. “Its real-time alerts ensure that police personnel are always prepared to act efficiently, reducing response time significantly.”
The system flagged about 250 individuals during the festival period, all of whom had criminal records. These individuals were tracked discreetly and subjected to preventive measures to ensure public safety. The integration of AI technology not only improved surveillance efficiency but also minimized the need for large-scale manual monitoring, allowing police to allocate resources more strategically.
The AI system is equipped with features such as facial recognition, behavior analysis, and automated reporting, ensuring that law enforcement can monitor events without infringing on privacy rights. Officials emphasized that the system operates under strict legal guidelines and is continuously audited to prevent misuse.
Experts believe such AI-based systems represent the future of policing in smart cities, where safety and technology go hand in hand. “AI surveillance is not just about tracking; it’s about proactive safety measures,” said a technology analyst. “Pune’s adoption of this system sets an important precedent for other cities in India.”
While the system has received praise for enhancing security, privacy advocates have urged careful regulation to ensure ethical use. Pune Police have assured the public that all data is processed in compliance with privacy laws and only used for legitimate law enforcement purposes.
The success of this AI alert system highlights the increasing role of artificial intelligence in maintaining urban safety, particularly during large-scale public events. Pune Police’s initiative serves as a model for integrating advanced technology into modern policing, potentially paving the way for wider adoption across the country.
