Major Water Pipeline Damaged in Nigdi During Metro Construction, Residents Urged to Conserve Water

Damaged water pipeline repair. PCMC

A significant water pipeline in Nigdi, which plays a critical role in supplying water to Pimpri-Chinchwad, was damaged earlier this week during ongoing Metro Line construction activities. The incident has disrupted water supply in several areas, prompting authorities to take urgent repair measures.

According to Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the pipeline damage occurred late Monday night while construction work was underway for the Pune Metro expansion project. The affected pipeline is part of the main water distribution network, making the repair work a priority for municipal officials.

PCMC engineers have already mobilized repair teams to address the damage. “We are working round the clock to restore the water supply. The repairs are challenging due to the heavy machinery and Metro construction activity in the area,” said a PCMC spokesperson. “We expect to complete the work by Thursday morning.”

In the meantime, the civic body has urged residents of Nigdi, Chinchwad, and surrounding areas to conserve water. Temporary water rationing has been advised, with supply disruptions expected to continue until the repair is completed. The PCMC has also arranged for water tankers in the affected areas to ease the inconvenience for residents.

The incident has raised concerns about the impact of large-scale infrastructure projects on essential services. Local residents have expressed frustration, pointing out that Metro construction has repeatedly caused utility disruptions in recent months. “We understand the need for modern infrastructure, but frequent disruptions to water and power supply are affecting daily life,” said Rajesh Patil, a resident of Nigdi.

PCMC has assured residents that such incidents are being addressed with better planning and coordination to minimize disruption. The civic body is also conducting an assessment to identify other pipelines or utilities that could be at risk due to Metro construction work.

Once completed, the Metro expansion project is expected to greatly improve Pune’s public transport system, but the Nigdi pipeline incident underscores the need for better safeguards during construction work. Residents are hopeful that the repair work will be completed on time and services restored promptly.
