Pune Police’s Zone 1 unit on Sunday sent 43 criminals to jail as part of preventive action ahead of the Navratri festival. Officials said the move was aimed at ensuring peace and security during the celebrations, which attract large gatherings across the city.
The action comes as part of a wider security plan to prevent disturbances during the nine-day festival. Police said those taken into custody include repeat offenders and individuals with a record of creating public nuisance.
Senior officers confirmed that the preventive detentions are intended to send a strong message to anti-social elements against attempting to disrupt public order. Authorities added that the crackdown will help maintain a safe environment for devotees and citizens participating in cultural and religious events.
The police department has also increased patrolling in sensitive areas, deployed additional personnel near major temples and event venues, and stepped up surveillance measures. Officials stated that these steps are necessary given the high footfall expected in marketplaces, pandals, and other public spaces during Navratri.
Zone 1 officials noted that such preventive actions are carried out routinely during major festivals to deter potential law and order issues. The police have appealed to citizens to cooperate with security arrangements and report any suspicious activities.
The measures are part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace in Pune during the festive season.
