Frequent cancellations and delays in Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus services have once again emerged as a major concern for commuters, particularly during the monsoon season. The recurring problem of waterlogging and poor road conditions continues to disrupt public transport across the city.
Several areas, including Warje, Market Yard, and Katraj, have witnessed severe waterlogging, leading to traffic congestion and impacting bus schedules. In a recent incident, a PMPML bus was immobilised after getting stuck in a large pothole near Warje Malwadi, highlighting persistent road maintenance issues. Pune Traffic Police have identified 131 waterlogging points and over 100 pothole-prone stretches of road that frequently affect traffic flow.
The problem is compounded by the operational strain faced by PMPML. Reports reveal that around 150 buses are currently out of service due to delays in spare part procurement, reducing the number of operational buses and placing additional pressure on the fleet. The introduction of electric buses has not eased the situation; in 2024 alone, PMPML recorded 9,582 breakdowns involving electric buses — a 45% increase from the previous year. Problems such as battery failures, air conditioning malfunctions, and punctures are cited as major reasons for these breakdowns.
Commuters have expressed growing frustration over the lack of reliable transport during the rainy season. Incidents of buses getting stuck in potholes and delays caused by waterlogged roads have sparked public outrage, with citizens urging Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and PMPML to take immediate action. Many have demanded prioritised infrastructure upgrades, better drainage systems, and timely bus maintenance to avoid recurring problems.
The persistent monsoon-related disruptions to PMPML services underline the need for urgent reforms in Pune’s public transport and road infrastructure. Experts say that improving road conditions, strengthening drainage, and ensuring proper fleet maintenance are essential to restoring commuter confidence and ensuring a reliable transport system for the city.
