TVK Suspends Vijay’s Political Rallies for Two Weeks Following Karur Stampede

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has announced a suspension of all political rallies led by actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay for the next two weeks following the tragic stampede at a Karur rally that claimed 41 lives and injured over 60 others. The decision comes amid rising public concern and political controversy over the incident.

The rally, held on September 27, drew a massive crowd far exceeding expectations. Police estimates suggested that approximately 30,000 attendees gathered for the event, which was initially planned for around 10,000 participants. The overwhelming turnout led to overcrowding, insufficient arrangements for crowd control, and inadequate essential services such as water and medical aid. These factors contributed to the chaos and eventual stampede.

The tragedy claimed the lives of 41 individuals, including several women and children. Multiple attendees sustained serious injuries. Following the incident, Tamil Nadu police arrested two senior TVK functionaries and placed them under judicial remand. Authorities have since formed special investigation teams to apprehend other leaders allegedly responsible for negligence during the rally.

In a formal statement on October 1, TVK declared that all rallies across Tamil Nadu would be postponed for two weeks. The party cited collective mourning and a sense of responsibility toward the victims and their families as the reason for the suspension. Vijay, in a video message, expressed deep condolences to the families affected and urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin not to take punitive actions against his supporters. He offered himself for accountability and asserted that the truth behind the incident would eventually emerge.

The Karur stampede has intensified political tensions in Tamil Nadu. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) accused TVK of disregarding safety protocols. DMK leaders released video evidence alleging that TVK cadres breached security cordons and ignored police advisories, worsening crowd conditions and triggering the tragedy.

Vijay, however, has refuted these allegations. He suggested that the incident might have been orchestrated to tarnish his political movement and questioned the timing of FIRs against his party leaders. He vowed to continue his political journey with renewed determination despite the challenges ahead.

The incident has also raised serious concerns about public safety during political events in the state. Tamil Nadu government officials have maintained that adequate measures were in place, asserting that the tragedy resulted from unauthorized crowd movements and insistence by organizers to allow a vehicle entry into a congested area. Still, the event has underscored the pressing need for stricter crowd management rules and oversight for large-scale gatherings.

As investigations proceed, both the government and TVK face mounting pressure to ensure justice for the victims. The suspension of Vijay’s rallies represents a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, reflecting the profound impact of the Karur tragedy on the state’s political discourse and public sentiment.
