June 17, 2025:
The Sachin Tendulkar Foundation has announced a major developmental initiative to build 50 playgrounds across Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh, one of the regions most affected by Naxalite insurgency. The project aims to empower local youth through sports and provide safe recreational spaces in remote tribal areas.
The announcement was made in coordination with the Dantewada District Administration, which will support the implementation of the initiative. The playgrounds will be developed in phases and will be equipped with basic sports infrastructure including football fields, volleyball courts, and open gym facilities.
Sachin Tendulkar, former cricketer and Bharat Ratna awardee, said in a statement, “I believe that sports can inspire hope and transform communities. Through this initiative, we hope to create positive spaces that engage children and steer them towards a better future.”
District officials confirmed that the project will adopt a community-based model, encouraging participation from local youth groups and gram panchayats in planning and maintenance. The playgrounds are expected to serve as platforms for physical development, mental well-being, and social integration of children living in vulnerable and violence-prone areas.
Dantewada Collector Mayank Chaturvedi expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, “This is more than an infrastructure project. It is about healing communities and giving children a reason to dream again. The involvement of the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation brings both credibility and momentum to our ongoing developmental efforts.”
The region has witnessed decades of armed conflict and underdevelopment, often depriving its youth of basic facilities and opportunities. Experts believe that sports-based interventions like this could play a key role in promoting peace and stability in insurgency-affected zones.
The Sachin Tendulkar Foundation has previously undertaken various social impact initiatives in the areas of health, education, and sports. The Dantewada project marks one of its largest grassroots efforts aimed specifically at youth engagement in a conflict-ridden area.
Construction of the first phase of playgrounds is expected to begin within the next two months, with active monitoring from both the Foundation and the district administration. Authorities hope the initiative will become a model for other similar regions across India.
