10 September,2025 -Canada has imposed its most stringent student visa policies in over a decade, resulting in the rejection of approximately 80% of Indian student visa applications in 2025. This marks a significant shift from previous years when Canada was a preferred destination for Indian students seeking higher education abroad.
According to data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the overall student visa rejection rate for 2025 stands at 62%, with Indian applicants experiencing the highest rejection rate among all international students. In 2024, Canada admitted around 188,630 Indian students, but this number has drastically declined due to the tightened visa policies.
The Canadian government attributes these changes to several factors, including a deliberate reduction in study permits, stricter regulatory criteria to curb misuse of the student visa system, and efforts to manage infrastructure and housing strains in the country. Additionally, the implementation of higher financial requirements for international students has further complicated the application process.
The surge in visa rejections has left thousands of Indian students and their families in a state of uncertainty. Many students who had invested significant time and resources into their applications are now exploring alternative study destinations. Germany has emerged as a popular choice, offering more accessible visa policies and a growing number of English-taught programs.
Educational consultants report a sharp decline in inquiries about studying in Canada, with many students opting for countries like Germany, the United States, and Australia. This shift is also evident in the changing preferences of Indian students, with only 9% now considering Canada as their top study destination, down from 26.8% in 2023.
The tightening of Canada’s student visa policies is part of a broader trend observed in other Western countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, which have also implemented stricter immigration measures. This global shift is prompting Indian students to reconsider their study abroad options, leading to increased interest in countries like Germany, which offer quality education with more favorable visa regulations.
