State Signs Pact with TuTr Hyperloop for Cargo Link

Hyperloop cargo transport

August 21,2025 — The Maharashtra government has signed an agreement with TuTr Hyperloop Pvt. Ltd., a startup from IIT Madras, to build a cargo hyperloop between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the proposed Vadhavan Port.

The project will use a Linear Induction Motor (LIM) system. It will carry freight in pods at high speed through a dedicated corridor. Officials said it would cut travel time and lower transport costs.

The pact revives Maharashtra’s interest in hyperloop technology. Earlier plans for passenger services had not moved forward. The present plan is for cargo only.

JNPT, in Navi Mumbai, is the country’s busiest container port. Vadhavan, in Palghar district, is a deep-draft port now under development. A fast link between the two is expected to improve movement of goods.

TuTr Hyperloop has been working on LIM technology at IIT Madras. The firm has carried out trials and will now prepare detailed plans with the state.

A senior official said the system could reduce congestion on highways and provide a cleaner mode of transport. The government will examine costs, feasibility, and safety before work begins.

Experts believe success here could lead to similar freight corridors elsewhere. India’s ports handle rising volumes each year. Faster cargo movement, they said, is essential for trade.

The agreement marks one of the first efforts in the country to apply hyperloop to freight. Studies and clearances will be taken up in the coming months.
