Jalalabad in Uttar Pradesh Renamed Parshurampuri After Home Ministry Approval

Jalalabad renamed Parshurampuri

August 21,2025 — The Union Home Ministry has approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district as Parshurampuri. The decision follows a proposal submitted by the Uttar Pradesh government earlier this year.

According to official communication, the proposal was sent by the state government on June 27 and was recommended by the Ministry of Home Affairs on August 14. A gazette notification formalizing the change is expected shortly.

Jalalabad, founded around 1560 by Mughal emperor Akbar, has long held historical significance. The town is also associated with religious importance, being regarded by many as the birthplace of Bhagwan Parshuram. Local residents point to the presence of ancient temples in the area, reinforcing its mythological connection.

Union Minister of State Jitin Prasada, who hails from Shahjahanpur, welcomed the approval and described it as a “moment of pride” for the region. He expressed gratitude to Home Minister Amit Shah and the central government for endorsing the renaming.

The renaming marks another instance of place names in Uttar Pradesh being altered to reflect cultural and historical heritage. Supporters argue that the new name restores traditional identity, while critics note that such moves often carry political undertones.

With the gazette notification pending, administrative changes such as signage, official documents, and government records are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

The renaming of Jalalabad to Parshurampuri is being viewed as both a symbolic step and a matter of regional pride, linking the town’s modern identity to its historical and mythological roots.
