Parliament Clears IIM Bill; Assam to Get First Campus in Guwahati

Indian Parliament passes IIM Bill

August 21,2025:
Parliament has passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, enabling the creation of Assam’s first Indian Institute of Management at Guwahati. The Bill, adopted during the Monsoon Session, amends provisions of the 2017 Act to formally include the proposed institute within the national network of IIMs.

The Guwahati institute will become the 22nd IIM in the country and the second in the North-East, the first being in Shillong. With this addition, the government aims to widen access to professional management education and strengthen academic infrastructure in the region.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, presenting the Bill, said the new IIM would act as a major centre for higher learning and research. He noted that the institute would support entrepreneurship, skill-building, and policy studies, thereby contributing to economic growth both in Assam and beyond.

Officials have indicated that the institute will initially function from a temporary campus before shifting to a permanent site near Guwahati. The final campus is expected to include advanced classrooms, research facilities, and residential complexes.

The decision has drawn support from Assam’s leadership, who called it a long-awaited step. State representatives expressed hope that the presence of an IIM will bring new opportunities for students, attract industry collaborations, and enhance Guwahati’s standing as an education hub.

Observers note that the establishment of the institute is likely to generate wider benefits, including job creation, regional investment, and stronger academic-industry linkages. The move is also seen as part of the Centre’s broader policy to expand premier institutions to underrepresented areas.

With the passage of the Bill, Assam now prepares to host its first IIM, a development regarded as significant for both the state and the North-East at large.
