Thailand-Cambodia Clashes Continue Despite Trump’s Ceasefire Announcement

Thailand-Cambodia border conflict ongoing

Fighting along the Thailand-Cambodia border persists for a sixth consecutive day, with neither Bangkok nor Phnom Penh acknowledging the ceasefire claimed by U.S. President Donald Trump, as military exchanges intensify across several frontier provinces.

In a social media post on Friday, former U.S. President Trump asserted that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to “cease all shooting” and resume a peace accord originally brokered under his administration. However, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul flatly rejected that claim, declaring that hostilities would continue until Cambodian forces withdraw from contested land and no longer pose a threat to Thai territory.

Escalation of Warfare

  • Thai fighter jets reportedly carried out airstrikes across the border, including in Cambodia’s Pursat and Koh Kong provinces.
  • Cambodian authorities accused Bangkok of continuing bombardment of civilian infrastructure hours after the ceasefire was purportedly agreed.

The renewed clashes mark one of the sharpest escalations since July 2025, with heavy weaponry — including multi-rocket systems and aerial assets — deployed by both sides.

Humanitarian Impact: Mass Displacements and Community Hardship

The border conflict has triggered a major humanitarian crisis:

  • Over half a million people displaced — including families in Thai provinces such as Surin, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani and Cambodian border districts.
  • Rural residents seek shelter under precarious conditions, with some volunteers remaining behind to safeguard livestock and homes amid ongoing shelling.

Local infrastructure, including homes, hotels, bridges, and markets, has been damaged or destroyed, deepening economic and social disruption.

Contradictory Political Messaging

President Trump’s statement framed the situation as a diplomatic success — asserting that both leaders had “agreed to cease all shooting” and aimed to return to an earlier peace agreement.

However, both Thai and Cambodian officials clarified that:

  • There is no effective ceasefire in place as of Saturday morning, with military operations actively ongoing.
  • Thailand insists it will continue action until Cambodian troops withdraw from disputed areas and remove landmines.
  • Cambodia has urged Thailand to immediately halt hostilities and respect its sovereignty.

International observers, including neighboring Laos, have called for restraint and a renewed diplomatic push to de-escalate tensions.

Deep-Rooted Territorial Dispute Underlies Renewed Conflict

The conflict stems from a decades-old territorial dispute over colonial-era border demarcations that has periodically flared since the two countries regained independence. A peace accord signed in Kuala Lumpur on 26 October 2025 had outlined a monitored ceasefire and de-escalation process, but the agreement has struggled to hold amid renewed hostilities.

Heavy exchanges of artillery and allegations of first strikes by both sides underscore the challenges in establishing lasting peace without robust verification measures and confidence-building steps.
