Uddhav and Raj Thackeray Join Hands for Marathi Pride: Joint Rally on July 6 Over Language Issue

Marathi pride rally

June 27:
In a significant political development, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray are set to share the stage for the first time in over two decades. The two leaders will jointly address a rally on July 6 at Shivaji Park in Mumbai to highlight issues concerning the Marathi language and regional identity.

The event, being seen as a show of unity for the cause of Marathi pride, comes at a time when there is growing concern over the diminishing use and importance of the Marathi language in government, education, and commercial sectors. Both leaders are expected to emphasize the need for stronger implementation of existing language policies and demand new measures to safeguard the cultural and linguistic heritage of Maharashtra.

According to party sources, the rally will focus on the “Marathi Asmita” (Marathi identity) agenda, with a special appeal to youth and local communities to uphold the language in daily life and official use. The event will also address the increasing presence of other languages in urban Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai, which both parties claim is leading to the marginalization of Marathi speakers.

“This is not about politics. This is about the language, the culture, and the identity of the sons of the soil,” a senior Shiv Sena (UBT) functionary said. MNS sources also confirmed that the rally will see both leaders make strong appeals to the state government to enforce Marathi signboards, promote Marathi-medium education, and prioritize locals in employment.

The Thackeray cousins, who once represented a united Shiv Sena before splitting in 2006, have often taken similar stands on issues concerning Marathi Manoos (Marathi people) but never shared a platform. Political analysts believe the July 6 rally could be the beginning of a strategic alliance ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2024.

“This joint appearance is symbolic. It sends a strong message to their voter base that when it comes to Marathi pride, old rivalries can be put aside,” said political analyst Hemant Deshpande.

The upcoming rally is also expected to include cultural performances, addresses by local Marathi artists, and public participation from across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The parties have begun mobilizing cadres for the event, and heavy turnout is anticipated.

With language rights becoming an emotionally charged issue in Maharashtra, the joint rally by Uddhav and Raj Thackeray could reshape the state’s political narrative and signal a potential realignment of regional forces focused on linguistic and cultural nationalism.
