In a sweeping enforcement move, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched an intensified verification drive targeting suspected illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants, particularly among municipal staff in major cities such as Lucknow and Jhansi. The state’s administration, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has directed district authorities to conduct systematic identity checks and strengthen monitoring mechanisms amid escalating internal security concerns.
Municipal Workforce Under Spotlight
The verification drive gained momentum after municipal bodies, especially in Lucknow, raised alarms over a significant number of sanitation workers with questionable documentation. Surprise inspections were carried out at several municipal facilities, where identity documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and residency papers were checked for authenticity.
Top municipal officials, including senior members of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, have personally supervised the inspections. Outsourcing agencies have been issued strict directives to halt all new recruitments until comprehensive verification of existing staff is completed. Authorities suspect that many recruits, allegedly posing as migrants from states such as Assam, may in fact be undocumented Bangladeshi nationals employed through private contractors.
Intelligence Inputs Raise Concerns
According to intelligence assessments shared with state authorities, an alarmingly high percentage of municipal sanitation staff may be working on forged or fraudulent identity documents. Preliminary findings suggest the possible involvement of local facilitators who helped unauthorized migrants procure fake papers, enabling them to blend into government-run services.
Officials also believe this infiltration may extend beyond sanitation departments, prompting a wider review of contractual positions across municipal bodies in Uttar Pradesh.
Detention Centres and Statewide Action
Following the Chief Minister’s instructions, all district magistrates have been asked to identify suspected infiltrators and initiate action under immigration and penal laws. Temporary detention centres are being established in every district to house individuals under verification until their citizenship or immigration status is legally resolved.
Police and intelligence agencies have been directed to work in coordination, including collecting biometric data and conducting background checks through national databases. The move is part of a broader plan to create a centralized identity-verification framework for migrants in urban sectors.
Document Fraud and Trafficking Nexus Exposed
The crackdown comes on the heels of a major bust by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which recently dismantled a network accused of producing fake Aadhaar and other identity documents for Bangladeshi, Rohingya, and Nepali nationals. Investigators recovered forged stamps, digital tools, and fabricated credentials, pointing to a well-organized racket with interstate links.
Officials believe such networks may have supported the entry and employment of undocumented individuals across multiple districts. The discovery has intensified state efforts to uncover trafficking and forgery operations operating under the guise of migrant labor recruitment.
Balancing Security and Due Process
While the verification campaign reflects the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal immigration, authorities emphasize that the process will remain transparent and lawful. Individuals able to provide legitimate documents and verifiable identity details will not face punitive action, officials said.
