Uttar Pradesh Government Launches ‘No Helmet, No Fuel’ Drive to Curb Road Accidents

UP helmet safety campaign

August 29, 2025: In a significant move aimed at improving road safety, the Uttar Pradesh government announced today that it will launch a month-long “No Helmet, No Fuel” campaign across the state from September 1 to September 30, 2025. Under this initiative, petrol pumps have been instructed to deny fuel to two-wheeler riders who are not wearing helmets.

According to government sources, the campaign is designed to enforce helmet usage among riders, curb road accidents, and reduce the alarming number of fatalities involving two-wheeler riders. Uttar Pradesh witnesses thousands of road accident deaths annually, many of which involve riders without helmets.

District magistrates, in coordination with District Road Safety Committees, will oversee the campaign’s implementation. Police, transport, and revenue officials will work together to ensure strict compliance. Petrol station operators have been directed to prominently display notices highlighting the “No Helmet, No Fuel” rule and to educate riders on the importance of helmet use.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed full support for the initiative, stating that it is aimed at saving lives and promoting responsible riding behaviour. He emphasized that helmets are a critical safety measure, and non-compliance has often contributed to fatal accidents on state roads.

The Transport Department has also announced a public awareness drive to complement the enforcement efforts. Media campaigns through print, electronic, and social media platforms will educate citizens about the importance of helmets and the legal obligations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

While the campaign has been widely welcomed, industry representatives have raised concerns regarding the prevalence of substandard helmets. Rajeev Kapur, President of the Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association of India, noted that a significant number of inexpensive helmets available in the market are counterfeit and may not offer adequate protection. Authorities have been urged to ensure that only certified helmets are used to maximize safety.

The “No Helmet, No Fuel” campaign is expected to be closely monitored throughout its duration. Officials hope that strict enforcement, combined with public awareness, will instill a culture of responsible riding and ultimately reduce the state’s road accident fatalities.
