Veteran socialist leader and renowned labour-rights activist Dr. Baba Adhav passed away in Pune on Monday evening at the age of 95. Known widely as “Baba Adhav,” he was one of Maharashtra’s most influential voices for social justice, dedicating more than six decades to empowering workers in the unorganised sector.
A Lifelong Commitment to Social Justice
Born in 1930 in Pune, Babasaheb Pandurang Adhav initially trained as an Ayurveda doctor before fully immersing himself in social activism. His early involvement in workers’ movements in the 1950s laid the foundation for a lifetime of advocacy centred on equality, dignity, and labour rights.
Over the years, Baba Adhav emerged as a formidable organiser for informal-sector workers such as headloaders (hamals), autorickshaw drivers, hawkers, waste collectors, domestic workers, and construction labourers. His voice became synonymous with the struggles and aspirations of those historically excluded from formal labour protection.
Landmark Contributions to Labour Movements
Dr. Adhav’s influence was rooted in meaningful grassroots initiatives that transformed the lives of thousands.
Some of his most notable contributions include:
- Hamal Panchayat — A pioneering union for headloaders that became a model for labour organisation in the informal sector.
- Rickshaw Panchayat and several worker-collectives — Platforms that gave dignity and representation to autorickshaw drivers, street vendors, and waste-collection workers.
- Ek Gaon, Ek Panvatha (One Village, One Water Point) — A powerful movement aimed at dismantling caste-based discrimination in access to public water facilities.
- Kasthachi Bhakar — A community-driven effort to provide affordable meals to low-income groups.
Despite his advancing age, Adhav remained a dynamic voice in public movements. As recently as late 2025, he participated in protest actions, including a hunger strike demanding fair electoral practices.
Final Days
Baba Adhav had been unwell for several weeks, battling complications arising from cancer, lung infections, kidney issues, and recurrent pneumonia. He was admitted to a private hospital in Pune on November 24 after severe health deterioration. His condition worsened further, leading to life support intervention. He passed away at 8:25 pm on Monday following a cardiac arrest.
An Enduring Legacy
Baba Adhav’s passing marks the loss of a towering figure who championed the rights of the marginalised with unwavering conviction. His pioneering work, especially with unorganised labourers, reshaped labour activism in Maharashtra and inspired generations of social reformers.
