June 27, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for the ghat regions of Pune and adjoining districts, forecasting intense showers over the next few days. This development follows the steady progress of the southwest monsoon across Maharashtra, bringing much-anticipated relief to several parts of the state.
According to IMD officials, strong westerly winds from the Arabian Sea, combined with favorable atmospheric patterns, are likely to trigger widespread rainfall across the Western Ghats, including Lonavala, Tamhini, and Malshej Ghats. The IMD has placed certain areas under an orange alert, indicating the potential for heavy to very heavy downpours.
“The monsoon has advanced over most regions of Maharashtra, and current weather models indicate a significant increase in rainfall activity in hilly terrains over the next 48 to 72 hours,” said an IMD spokesperson based in Pune.
In response to the forecast, the Pune district administration has advised citizens, especially those in rural and high-altitude areas, to remain alert. Tourists and trekking groups have been urged to defer travel plans to ghat sections due to the risk of landslides, slippery roads, and reduced visibility. Precautionary teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been kept on standby in case of emergencies.
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has also warned of potential disruptions to transport services in affected regions due to water accumulation and road hazards. Within Pune city, moderate to heavy rainfall may impact routine activities, especially during rush hours.
Despite concerns around travel and safety, the intensified rainfall has been welcomed by the farming community. Farmers across the district have begun preparations for the kharif sowing season, particularly for crops such as soybean, paddy, maize, and cotton.
“This rainfall is exactly what we needed to begin sowing. Timely rains can make a big difference for our yield,” said Sunil Pawar, a farmer from Indapur.
The IMD has advised residents to stay updated with local weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable regions. With monsoon conditions expected to persist and strengthen further, authorities emphasize the need for vigilance and preparedness in the coming days.
